In The Soup

4

Alexandre Rockwell's Sundance winner looked to be the start of a promising career, but he hasn't made much of an impact since. Still, this remains a remarkably endearing debut, not least due to the central pairing of Seymour Cassel and Steve Buscemi.

Desperate to pay the rent, wannabe auteur Buscemi hawks his script to anyone, finding a producer of sorts in Cassel's larger-than-life petty Mobster. As they join forces, the older man shares all he knows about life, love, etc in the kind of low-budget, black-and-white minipiece they really don't make anymore.

DVD Extras:

Almost 35 minutes of deleted scenes and outtakes, most of which are here for a reason. There's also a reasonably interesting Buscemi doc shot during the making of his sophomore directorial effort, Animal Factory.
