Writer/director Lucile Hadzihalilovic is the girlfriend, editor and producer of Gaspar Noé (Irréversible), so it’s hardly surprising that this lyrical study of female maturation is a haunting, disquieting and ambiguous affair. Innocence follows a group of girls at an otherworldly school in the woods, where they are taught dance and biology, forbidden from leaving the grounds and seem complicit in the dark secret behind their training. Why do new pupils arrive in coffins, older pupils disappear at night and mysterious audiences watch the girls dancing in a subterranean theatre?
