Now that Billy Wilder's gone, Cameron Crowe's about the only writer-director who could so successfully pull off this fine balance between schmaltz and quality storytelling. Tom Cruise excels as emotionally-stunted sports agent Jerry Maguire, who has a crisis of conscience and leaves his amoral agency, taking with him Cuba Gooding Jr's footballer and Renée Zellweger's `dowdy' assistant.
DVD Extras:
An early UK DVD release, Jerry... was long overdue an extras-packed reissue. This two-disc set doesn't have the most spectacular array of features ever, but most of the material is worthwhile (deleted scenes, rehearsal footage, photo gallery), even if it is "bonus" rather than "essential".The director/cast commentary is likeable, but hardly packed with revelatory anecdotes - Cruise, Gooding Jr and Zellweger are too busy laughing. The Making Of, meanwhile, is a lame promo featurette (all sell, no soul - ironically). Far better is the hilarious How To Be A Sports Agent, where a real-life star-seller provides an introduction to his cutthroat industry.
