George Formby: loveable clown or face you’d like to slap? In his sixth film the gangly underdog accidentally enters a fitness tournament to win the love of a girl; mishaps, pratfalls and jaunty tunes ensue. Anachronistic though this feels, Formby is a committed physical performer, and his naïf will endear or infuriate to taste.
