In the four-minute Making Of, co-writers Josh Stolberg and Andrew Shaifer state their intention to “re-write the teen movie” - which they’ve managed, in so far as they’ve left out the good bits.
Kids... sees a Breakfast Club-style gang of misfits defy their Tina Fey-wannabe high school principal (Lost’s Julie Bowen) with a few Pump Up The Volume-lite public broadcasts. Half the cast are playing it for John Hughes-y sincerity, the other half (including Nicole Richie) think they’re in Scary Movie. Nothing – aside from the one good line: “You’re so gay, Cher dresses up like you” and the chaff-free trailer – works.
