King Rat

Cynicism and self-interest are the keys to survival in Bryan Forbes’ 1965 King Rat, set in a WWII Japanese POW camp in Singapore. With more than one nod to Billy Wilder’s similarly-themed Stalag 17, Forbes’ movie does suffer from uncertainty of tone but deploys a crack cast: George Segal, Tom Courtney, Denholm Elliott, James Fox et al - and Burnett Guffey’s photography captures all the sweaty putrescence of the setting.
