Michel Ocelot's 2-D folktale may look modest next to the pixel perfection of Finding Nemo, but this West African-set animated charmer is way more sussed than your average Holly-'toon, as our foot-high hero marches out of his mother's womb and into battle with an evil sorceress who's (literally) a maneater.
Episodic yarn-spinning and some squirrel-hugging cutesyness apart, this is a feast of lush draughtsmanship, sparky characterisation and life lessons that are taught rather than preached. Slapped backs all round, then - - especially considering Ocelot's original backers asked for his topless tribeswomen to get their bras on. Thankfully, he's made those prudes look like proper tits, sticking to his guns to mint a work that's not only steeped in authenticity but is terrific fun.
