Malignant child-spirits, lank-haired ghouls, ancient curses, queasy water-imagery – you can tell writer-director Rigoberto Castañeda has watched his fair share of Asian horror movies. KM31, one of Mexico’s all-time box-office hits, has atmosphere by the bucketful, even if it’s a tad short on coherent plotting. A young woman, Agata is involved in a terrible accident on a lonely, supposedly haunted stretch of road. Agata’s twin sister, her fiancé and the sister’s boyfriend resolve to plumb the mystery – which, as any horror-movie buff could tell them, is not a good idea.
