Kundun

3

God, guys `n' gangsters are the overarching themes of Martin Scorsese's career, and he followed the eye-popping brutality of Casino with this evocative depiction of the Dalai Lama's turbulent passage to power in Tibet and his subsequent exile. Thoughtful, beautifully photographed and impressively acted by a non-professional cast, it's a moving biopic that richly rewards repeat viewing.

DVD Extras:

None. Given the drawn-out production of Gangs Of New York (now due for release a year later than originally planned), perhaps Scorsese is too busy to bother with extras, but it's odd that such a voluble champion of cinema heritage should be so apparently unconcerned about his back catalogue. Perhaps when, or if, he retires, he'll make more effort with a special edition.
