As disastrous film productions go, Kurt&Courtney is the documentary equivalent of Heaven's Gate. Only unlike that dough-munching monster, Nick Broomfield's story of the life and death of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain wasn't scuppered by spending too much dosh, but by having too little. Squaring up against Cobain's control-freak widow Courtney Love, Broomfield discovers that indie filmmakers can't battle minted Hollywood celebs without taking casualties. The result? A farrago of lawyers' phone calls and Broomfield looking miserable. It's a mess, but also a brilliant, unintentional exposé of how celebrities, big business and, yes, money influence freedom of speech in America.
