PTA loves him and you should too: German émigré Max Ophüls, whose films on the circularity of love match content to form by making emphatic but elegant use of long mobile takes. Cranes, dollies... there’s stuff here to rival Boogie Nights’ sinuous opening shot, as Ophüls pirouettes his camera around and about amorous couples in 19th Century Vienna. Doc Circles Of Desire reminds us that La Ronde, for all its grace, was considered an “exploitation sex film” on its release, while Susan White’s commentary is fast, dense... and clearly read off the page.
