Ophüls’ early melodrama sees an anaesthetised movie diva recall her torrid love affairs. Good acting and lovely visual touches are let down by its flagging middle section.
The fantastic, pin-sharp image transfer almost makes up for that, before the audio lets the whole package down once more.
