La Signora Senza Camilie

Michelangelo Antonioni’s acerbic view of the Italian film industry

Michelangelo Antonioni’s third feature provides an acerbic view of the Italian film industry, torn between prestige productions nobody wants to see and lucrative, lowbrow sex-coms.

The lovely but inexpressive Lucia Bosé plays a shopgirl who’s discovered and transformed into a sex symbol – but then she marries her producer and suddenly he doesn’t want her flaunting herself on screen any more.

Antonioni has fun mocking moviemakers’ pretensions, but the satire gets repetitive, and Bosé’s glacial turn leaves a void at the heart of the film.
