At one point in his candid commentary, as he talks over a sequence in which someone's hand is torn apart, George Romero sighs and says, "You know, for some reason this just works better on the small screen." He's dead right.
Maybe it's the years of scrutinising his first three instalments on VHS, maybe it's this fourth part's contained claustrophobia - ironic, seeing as by this stage of their evolution both zombies and humans have more room to manoeuvre than ever. Either way, Land Of The Dead seems to have found its natural home on DVD. Here's hoping that now, after lacklustre theatrical receipts, its gruesome charms will be more widely appreciated.

This director's cut ups the gore with a face-peeling sequence and smattering of splattered heads that has make-up genius Greg Nicotero at his most outlandish. The Making Ofs, deleted scenes (zombie snogging!) and storyboards are solid, but it's their bookends that make the package. First off, John Leguizamo contributes a hilarious video diary, while secondly, When Shaun Met George sees guest zombies Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg giggling like schoolgirls in Romero's presence. "After all," Pegg observes, "the guy is a fucking legend." No arguments here.
