Even by the standards of 1949, this adventurous melodrama about a WW2 pilot volunteering for a dangerous mission after accidentally sinking an Allied sub must have seemed distinctly old-fashioned. It’s got a certain stiff-upper-lipped charm about it, but this is firmly in the third division of war movies.
