Le Bossu

1

Swashbuckling, old-school fun...

United by sharp swordplay, breezy wit and period finery, these French swashbucklers make for defiantly old-school fun.

In Bertrand Tavernier’s D’Artagnan’s Daughter, mini-Musketeer Eloïse (Sophie Marceau) drags creaking pa Philippe Noiret out of retirement. Played largely as spoof, it’s amiable enough but lacks true swash.

Better is Philippe de Broca’s Le Bossu, a more confident affair that bolsters playfulness with purpose, as Daniel Auteuil seeks to avenge his master’s death.
