Le Corbeau

5

French director Henri-Georges Clouzot's thickly atmospheric 1943 whodunnit stands as a terse thriller and a keen delineation of paranoia during the German Occupation. In ""A small town... anywhere"", ears burn as the distribution of anonymous poison-pen letters prompts the populace to fester, in the vengeful style of Fritz Lang's M. A cutting allegory wrapped in a mean-eyed mystery, it's raven-black at heart.
