Drake Doremus’ hip, based-on-truth indie starts out as an enchanting paean to young love, with aspiring furniture designer Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and visiting British student Anna (Felicity Jones) finding euphoric passion in Los Angeles.
After she stupidly overstays her tourist visa, it morphs into an extended break-up story. True, the frustrations that peck away at the characters’ long-distance devotion are all too tangible in places.
Yet Doremus has an exquisite eye for detail in depicting the heart-consuming agonies and ecstasies of new love. Meanwhile, Yelchin and Jones (in heavily improvised turns) bring affectingly real chemistry to their border-crossed paramours.
