Ten-year-old Gabe (Josh Hutcherson) lives in NYC with his divorced parents (West Wing-er Bradley Whitford and Sex And The City’s Cynthia Nixon). One long summer, he falls for karate-class partner Rosemary (Charlie Ray) as the two scoot around his neighbourhood – but dare he steal that first kiss before she’s packed off to camp?
Somehow, this Upper West Side story isn’t icky – the kids both act their age, while Whitford and Nixon, two of TV’s finest, both convince as estranged exes still sharing an apartment. A twinkling Mark Mothersbaugh-style score adds to the romance, and though Gabe’s narration is somewhat overused, it helps defuse sexual undertones (this isn’t The Squid & The Whale...).
DVD Extras:
The married-couple director and writer, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, cheerfully commandeer the extras, including alternative footage of Gabe shooting in a safety helmet and a production-heavy chat track.
