Lonely Are The Brave

Kirk Douglas plays a free-spirited cowboy in his own favourite role

This unusual modern-day western stars Kirk Douglas as John W Burns (the actor’s own favourite role), a free-spirited cowboy hemmed in by the fences of ’60s America.

When he attempts to break a pal out of prison, he is pursued by sheriff Walter Matthau, a one-sided manhunt pitting horse against helicopter.

Writer Dalton Trumbo’s time on the Hollywood blacklist ensures the eloquence of this parable of personal expression.

And despite some heavy-handed symbolism, David Miller’s direction foreshadows First Blood by framing big themes as rugged action, notably Douglas’ surreal scrap with a one-armed man.
