Looking For Richard

Cannily re-released on the back of The Merchant Of Venice, Al Pacino's 1996 love letter to the Bard's most perfidious villain is the perfect entry point for those who like screen Shakespeares but can't be done with all that hi-falutin' poetry.

Intercutting the best bits of Richard III with a free-form thesis on the scheming hunchback's relevance today, Pacino's work-in-progress is clearly a vanity project. But with contributions from Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey and Winona Ryder jostling for room with soundbites from directors, actors and scholars, it's still a busy, engaging blend of doc and drama that takes its cue from its restless, endlessly inquisitive star.
