Lost Boys: The Tribe

In the year of the ludicrously belated sequel (Rambo, Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull) comes Lost Boys: The Tribe, proving it might be fun to be a vampire but it ain’t always fun watching ’em have fun. “Who ordered the stake?” growls Corey Feldman’s fearless slayer Edgar Frog, returning with a throatful of gravel and none of his former charm. Good question...

Plot-wise it’s pretty much a re-run, the twist being that this time it’s a brother and sister (Tad Hilgenbrink, Autumn Reeser) who move to a sleepy California coastal town overrun with necknippers – cue a cover of ‘Cry Little Sister’ as Reeser’s deflowered by honcho bloodsucker Angus Sutherland (Kiefer’s half-brother; tenth of the talent). Can big bro save the day(s) or is li’l sis doomed to party all night, never grow old and really, really like extreme sports?

Kudos to Corey Haim for sitting this one out (probably literally, given the weight he’s packed on in the last 21 years). For while director PJ Pesce parades his love of Joel Schumacher’s original, sprinkling The Tribe with affectionate references and even tracking down that saxophone-bloke for a cameo, this sequel has little of The Lost Boys’ wit, brio or sex... a fact no amount of shaky-cam, flash cuts, slate-grey visuals or tits and gore can hide. Still, it’s better than the extras: two toothless featurettes (one on the “frenetic and real” action sequences, one on Edgar Frog’s arsenal) and a couple of alternative endings showing what became of Alan Frog ( Jamison Newlander). Like we care. Or, if we did, we don’t by the end of this nonsense. So why the four stars for the extras? Because you also get the first flick.
