Loudquietloud: A Film About The Pixies

3

Inspiration to Nirvana and sometime saviours of indie rock, The Pixies blazed briefly in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s before juddering to an acrimonious halt.

The end. No, wait. That’s not it... While there’s surely a fascinating tale to be told about how this glorious group of misfits from Boston became every cool kid’s favourite group, LoudQUIETLoud isn’t it. Instead we get a study of an older and wiser band tentatively treading the reunion trail.

With more awkward silences than rock posturing and high-fiving, the film seems worryingly lightweight at first. But then the cracks start to show. Kim and twin sister Kelley Deal battle to keep on the right side of sobriety, while it’s the drummer, of all people, who loses it. Meanwhile, Joey, the laptop-toting web designer lookalike guitarist, gazes on witheringly – and the reasons behind their 12 year absence become painfully apparent...
