Love Story

3

Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy marries girl, girl gets life-threatening illness, everyone cries... the plot arc that inspired a thousand TV movies sits at the heart of a true 70s phenomenon. Like it or loathe it (and that's generally the division it inspires), Love Story was so successful it's now a byword for romantic sentimentality. Ryan O'Neil and Ali McGraw are the lovelorn youngsters, respectively convincing as gurning WASP and kooky free spirit. All the real acting slack is picked up by veteran Ray Milland as O'Neil's rich dad, disgruntled that his lad is dating a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. If there was an Oscar for best use of cliches, Love Story would have walked it (it garnered a gobsmacking seven nominations, though it only won Best Score). Some with watch it with a box of tissue, others with a sick bag...
