Lovely, Still

A whimsical winter time romance...

Lovely Still review

Robert (Martin Landau) is a lonely bachelor whose chance meeting with neighbour Mary (Ellen Burstyn) snowballs effortlessly into a touching November-November romance.

Writer/director Nicholas Fackler’s debut proves it’s never too late to meet cute, or to make a film justified almost wholly by the likeability of its leads.

Alas, the more than capable performances are undermined by a tone that tips from fable-esque toward treacly.

But the biggest problem is the third-act reveal. in his haste to set up an emotionally wrenching finale, Fackler wastes his cast on half-formed characters who frustrate rather than engage.
