Shot on the Republic backlot in just 21 days, Orson Welles’s cinematic staging of The Scottish Play belies its low-budget origins by shrouding the papier-maché sets in lashings of dry ice and impressionistic lighting. The film is full of typically flamboyant Wellesian flourishes, with wild camera angles and melodramatic close-ups, creating an atmosphere steeped in dark, brooding intensity.
DVD Extras:
Bonus short Return To Glennascaul, which includes an introduction by fellow helmer Peter Bogdanovich. Featuring more than 20 minutes of fully restored footage (including a continuous 10-minute take which was butchered by the studio prior to the film's release) and a rarely screened bonus short, this is a disc which will delight Welles aficionados and provide a much-needed reminder that there's far more to the burly auteur than Citizen Kane.
