""It won't hurt. I'm always very careful..."" First seen plunging a syringe into a female train passenger, Martin (John Amplas) remains one of modern horror's more troubling creations. First glance, he's a nerd with a remote gape; closer up, he's scraping at your neck with chewed-down fingernails. Here, then, is vampire as sociopath, George A Romero distorting the bloodlust usually associated with the genre by presenting his protagonist as an insecure maniac. It's rough around the edges (variable acting and flaky FX abound) yet it still intrigues, still disgusts and - - important, this - still disturbs. One for the splat connoisseur.
