A dark Frank Capra morality tale which casts Gary Cooper as a simple-minded hobo duped by a corrupt politician into fronting a popular movement for social reform.
DVD Extras:
Commentary by film historian Ken Barnes, biogs, Meet The Cast featurettes, restoration comparison, vintage radio promos.Capra's anti-fascist fable somehow manages to mix comedy, cynicism, homely back woods wisdom and romance, though at its centre it's as sticky as a marshmallow. This digitally restored print is packaged with a host of worthwhile extras, including an excellent, authoritative, commentary from Barnes, whose observations are complemented by quotes from an archive interview with the director. There are also two radio dramatisations (Sorry Wrong Number and For Whom The Bell Tolls) featuring Cooper and co-star Barbara Stanwyk, together with impressively compiled biogs of Capra and the cast.
