Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

4

A real rarity this: a movie featuring two rock stars that isn't a turkey. David Bowie takes the lead as an English Major sent to a Japanese POW camp, where he clashes with the infatuated commandant played by the Yellow Magic Orchestra star Ryuichi Sakamoto. The latter provides a haunting score, while there's a remarkable acting debut from `Beat' Takeshi Kitano (known as a TV comic in 1983; a blistering director now) as an authoritarian sergeant who forms a bizarre but believable friendship with Colonel Lawrence (Tom Conti). Lush, daring and emotionally involving.
