Sean Ellis' underdog crime drama...

It may boast a southeast Asian setting and an up-and-coming Brit director, but this crime drama isn’t out to ape The Raid. Sean Ellis’ slow-burn Filipino thriller is very much its own beast: a fresh and heartfelt take on a well-trodden set-up.

Country boy Oscar (Jake Macapagal) and his family up sticks to the big city in search of a better life. Instead, they find the harsh realities of Manila’s seedy slums.

It’s after a relatively sedate first half that film really kicks into gear, as Oscar takes a job as an armoured truck driver, a move that exposes the extreme – and tragic – lengths to which he’ll resort to drag his clan out of poverty.
