Four years after bucking the curse of Stephen King with Stand By Me, Rob Reiner cracked it again with this gripping horror-thriller. This is largely due to Kathy Bates, who excels as the nuttier-than-a-squirrel's-turd nurse who rescues romantic novelist James Caan from a car accident. In an Oscar-winning turn, Bates moves flawlessly from cutesy country girl to psychotic leg mangler.
DVD Extras:
Misery Loves Company is an intelligent Making Of that burrows deep into the film's production (apparently, Kathy Bates was so anti-violence that she sobbed after grappling with co-star Caan). There's also an interview with composer Marc Shaiman, plus a gallery and trailers. But the real gold dust lies in two contrasting commentary tracks from scribbler William Goldman and director Reiner. Goldman's analysis is droll, while Reiner sounds like he still can't believe he made a movie this good.
