Modern Times

3

Two Chaplin classics...

Two Chaplin classics: one of his finest silent movies and his first ‘talkie’ – though Charlie utters nothing except a song in Euro-gibberish.

There’s a heavy dose of pathos, but it’s compensated for by inspired clowning: the ‘dance of the rolls’ in Gold Rush, Charlie getting caught up in the cogs of the production line in Modern Times.

Gold Rush is the remastered 1942‘sound’ version, but luckily the original comes as an extra – lovingly restored and graced with a masterly Neil Brand piano score – so that’s the one to go for. Veteran film historian David Robinson contributes useful intros.
