Mostly Martha

Chef Martha Klein (Martina Gedeck) is an obsessive-compulsive presiding over the kitchen of a swish Hamburg restaurant. Then her sister dies in a car crash, leaving Martha to look after her sibling's eight-year-old daughter, headstrong and grief-stricken Lina (Maxime Foerste). Further complications of the too-many-cooks variety arise when handsome, unorthodox Italian sous chef Mario (Sergio Castellitto) is parachuted into Martha's workplace...

Covering similar emotional territory to Lawrence Kasdan's The Accidental Tourist, writer/director Sandra Nettelbeck's understated rom-com is the tale of a control freak reconnecting with life. Throughout, cooking is used as a subtle metaphor for Martha's emotional journey, as when she agrees to let Mario cook for her at home, only to find herself hyperventilating when he leaves the kitchen looking like he's been in a food fight. Like a well-made dessert: sweet without ever being sickly.
