Mountains Of The Moon

4

Good to see one of our Lost Classics finally getting the re-release it deserves. Bob Rafelson's weighty historical drama doesn't quite live up to the significance of its subject: the quest to locate the source of the Nile in 1850s Africa. That said, at least it proves the director shares the persistence of his heroes, Richard Francis Burton and John Hanning Speke.

Played by Patrick Bergin and Iain Glen, these Victorian adventurers emerge as complex, even tragic individuals whose unspoken love ultimately turns to enmity. A brawny travelogue that refuses to flinch over the duo's numerous exploits, it's a breathlessly exciting piece, bolstered by Roger Deakins' enthralling photography and Delroy Lindo's vivid support. All that and the best spitting scene in the movies...
