Made pre-Juno, this Ellen Page vehicle proves she’s capable of rising above so-so material. With lip ring and manky locks, her wild child is an ideal recruit for a Manson-esque group preaching self-help to junkies. But her love for leader Eric Thal palls once he shaves her head, steals her cherry and adds her mom to his batty band of acolytes. Inspired by director Alison Murray’s own brushes with wacky activists, this showcases Page’s puckish charisma, although the scene with a driverless van is a fitting metaphor given the plot’s improbable trajectory.
