Mr Nice

Rhys Ifans gives a star turn as the Withnail of weed

Mr Nice review

The cult memoir of the ’90S, Howard Marks’ autobiog saw a lad from the Valleys found a multi-million dollar hash cartel because “there was just too fucking much of it” to smoke.

Too naughty for the standard-issue Britcom treatment, Bernard rose’s adap opts for lo-fi indie, with stylised period back projection, David Thewlis’ comedy IRA eejit and Chloë Sevigny as Marks’ wife.

Beneath the edginess, it’s the kind of romp you’d expect from Richard Curtis, not least because Rhys Ifans brings such heavy-lidded charm to Marks, the Withnail of weed.
