My Life Without me

4

The bleak strip-lighting and stuttering neon of trailer parks, all-night laundromats and hospital corridors illuminate Spanish helmer Isabel Coixet's English-language debut: a fragile, moving drama.

When young mother Ann (Sarah Polley) is told she has terminal cancer, she decides to keep it from her so-dumb-he's-innocent husband (Scott Speedman) and two kids. Instead, she embarks on a gentle, tear-steeped journey of discovery: from seeing how it feels to have false nails to embarking on an affair with lonely Lee (Mark Ruffalo, excellent). Along the way she makes small emotional connections - - with a shy doctor, a Milli Vanilli-obsessed hairdresser - - that demonstrate nothing matters in this world apart from how other people remember you.
