Number three of the ‘Six Moral Tales’, Maud is classic Eric Rohmer: witty, articulate, ironic and fascinated with ideas and how we deal with them.
The setting is wintry Clermont-Ferrand, where the devout Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) resolves to stop sowing wild oats and marry a good Catholic girl.
Then he meets free-thinking divorcee Maud (Françoise Fabian) and his moral rectitude falters.
Elegantly shot by Néstor Almendros, this was the film that brought Rohmer international fame. You can see why.
