On paper, Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and sometime The Simpsons writer Don Payne look like formidable partners in crime. Alas, this comic-book parody (boy meets girl, girl turns out to be a superhero, girl goes barmy when boy ditches her) hobbles more than hits. Luke Wilson is a feeble Stiller-lite foil for Uma Thurman, whose Lycra-hugged G-Girl – and her mortal alter-ego – sizzles throughout. None too chuffed at being dumped, her escalating spiral of revenge offers a glut of absurd and, on occasion, hilarious set-pieces. Credit, too, must go to Rainn Wilson (no relation), playing our hero’s best bud, for milking laughs from some disappointingly flat gags.
DVD Extras:
There’s a decent array of extras, including a sparky chat-track from director and writer, deleted scenes and a Your Worst Date featurette, but they do little more than prop up a fun, yet vacuous, Friday night movie. Better than My Hero, then... but certainly no Mystery Men.
