The film: Another solid, unflashy cop drama from Serpico director Sidney Lumet. Young, idealistic law student Sean Casey (Andy Garcia) climbs his way to the position of District Attorney in this tale of police corruption, crime and moral compromise. Lumet keeps it (obsessively) real, aided by a quality cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Ian Holm, Lena Olin and James Gandolfini.
DVD Extras:
Director's commentary, Interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, TV spots, trailer, filmographies. Lumet's commentary is adequate, if slightly condescending, but he predictably gushes with praise for his actors, regaling us with info on why it's so important to, like, keep it real. He also reveals that he hates sex scenes, because they never look real. Still, his old-school director sensibilities do make for interesting listening, and over half an hour's worth of on-set footage help make this an impressive disc.
