Shot on a shoestring in gorgeous near-monochrome, the Polish brothers' baffling, magical-realist tale is Wings Of Desire meets the Coen brothers with a hint of David Lynch. Set in a '50s town, this story of black-clad government agents trying to evacuate the eccentric townsfolk to make way for a hydro-electric plant is fractured, dreamlike and deadpan droll. The vast landscape plays a starring role as big names working for scale - - James Woods, Nick Nolte, Daryl Hannah - - pay tribute to the ambitious vision of the sibling auteurs.
