“Dull and poorly written,” reckons a rejection letter received by aspiring novelist Jane Lockhart (Karen Gillan) early in John McKay’s Scottish romcom.
Sadly, this verdict holds true for the film itself. A patchwork story sees Jane juggle writer’s block, her estranged dad (Gary Lewis) and her moody publisher/love interest (French actor Stanley Weber, miscast), all sewn together with largely laugh-free contrivance.
Perhaps the lack of focus explains why McKay never nails a satisfying tone, with Gillan’s low-key likeability at odds with Jane’s wacky Annie Hall-esque dress sense or the cloying whimsy whenever her novel’s protagonist comes to life.
