Besides being one of France’s busiest actors, Mathieu Amalric is carving out a promising career as a director.
In his third feature he also stars as a struggling impresario touring a group of over-the-hill US burlesque girls along the towns of France’s Atlantic coast.
The sleazy-moustached Amalric is at once charming and desperate, while his troupe – played by genuine burlesque artistes – are bawdily cheerful.
The freewheeling plot doesn’t go anywhere much, but it’s an engaging, good-natured romp that earned Amalric a Best Director gong at Cannes.
