A Hollywood remake of Takashi Miike’s 2004 hit (patched together from earlier, better vengeful-ghost films like Ringu and Ju-On), OMC is the cold swill resting at the bottom of the scraped barrel that is J-horror. Ed Burns accompanies Shannyn Sossamon on a quest to find out why her friends keep dying after receiving voicemails from themselves in the future. Some scares lurk in the darker sequences, but everything about the film’s ambition and quality can be summed up by the bit where it references a scene from Final Destination. Really?
