Here’s one for the adventurous. A two-hour Indonesian opera, sumptuously staged, designed, danced and performed to an ear-tingling gamelan score. The plot, based on an episode from the great Hindu epic The Ramayana, is straightforward love-triangle stuff. Setio (Martinus Miroto), a potter, has married Siti (Artika Sari Devi), a beautiful Javanese dancer. Ludiro (Eko Supriyanto), the powerful local boss, lusts after Siti and abducts her in Setio’s absence. Cue violence, eroticism and spectacular dance numbers staged by 400 extras. Sheer extravaganza.
