Out Of Africa

3

Self-consciously epic, director Sydney Pollack's 1985 plantation drama is the `true' story of Danish aristocrat Karen Blixen-Finecke (Meryl Streep). Settling in pre-WWI Kenya, she befriends the local tribespeople, bickers with Brits and eventually romances Robert Redford's big game hunter.

DVD Extras:

Director's commentary, production notes, cast and film-makers' biographies, theatrical trailer, web links. The extras are scant, though the commentary will please anyone willing to listen to it for more than 2 1/2 hours.

Verdict:

Despite its technical assurance and some strong performances, this is a film that favours spectacular landscapes over emotional depth. The Academy disagreed, handing it seven Oscars, but what do they know?
