This occasionally biting comedy is a funny and honest account of the joys and the trials of, well, parenthood. Although Steve Martin steals most of the movie as a father confused by his son's emotional instability, there is fine ensemble work from the likes of Dianne Weist and a grouchy Jason Robards. Sadly, it all becomes rather squelchy at the all-too-neat end; but then it was directed by Ron Howard.
