The critics of 1960 were shaken by Michael Powell's psycho drama, denouncing it as "filthy", "sick" and "beastly". It's all those things and more. Movie cameraman and part-time porn photographer Mark (Carl Böehm) was forced as a child to play guinea pig to his sicko father's scientific research. As an adult, he's turned on by filming young women as he impales them on his camera tripod. Anna Massey plays Helen, the neighbour who responds to his vulnerability but doesn't see his psychosis - - yet notices that "all this filming isn't healthy!"
DVD Extras:
Photo gallery, filmographies. The film's plummy accents and hammy acting may be from a different era, but the twisted themes are modern and dark, right down to the killer ending. It may have triggered an abrupt career suicide for Michael Powell, but it's now a much-admired masterpiece. Sadly, the paltry extras do it no justice.
