Pieces Of April

3

Punk-chick April (Katie Holmes) has problems. Her estranged family are driving to her new dive in Manhattan to share Thanksgiving turkey. Her terminally ill mother (a marvellous, Oscar-nommed Patricia Clarkson) hates her. And - - dammit! - - the oven's just broken. Cue a frantic mission to scrounge an hour or two's cooking time from each of her quirksome neighbours before the reunion...

Actually, writer/director Peter Hedges' DV debut is way more conventional than its offbeat verve would have you believe. But the humour sparkles sharp and true, and if an abrupt photo-montage climax hints that Hedges may be a better novelist (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?) than a director, there's no denying that his smart, slight movie finds some strikingly human observations.
