Alzheimer-afflicted grandma pressurised to hush-up a crime her grandson has committed

Director Lee Chang-dong mulls over the pressures of Korean society in this calm, compassionate but mercilessly acute film. It goes slow, yet digs deep into the dilemma of an Alzheimerafflicted grandma pressurised to hush-up a crime her grandson has committed.

Trying to write poetry while she still can, the woman’s close scrutiny of her world opens it up to us, without a shred of sentimentality. Veteran actress Yun Jung-hee gives a masterful, poignant turn, gradually revealing a surprisingly steely core under her character’s docile, fluttery actions.
